A West Coast man with inoperable bowel cancer has been paid accident compensation after his cancer worsened during a delay in diagnosis. Former mining worker and father-of-four Bruce Neilsen​, 59, wants an apology from the West Coast District Health Board (WCDHB) over his medical treatment. In June 2015, he had a colonoscopy in Christchurch and the surgeon found he had stage three rectal cancer. Bowel cancer surgeon and Bowel Cancer New Zealand medical advisor Dr Frank Frizelle said the 2009 guidelines referred to for the HDC decision were outdated.
