Warner Bros. and SonyToday is judgment day for Blade Runner 2049. But here’s the rub: Blade Runner 2049 could do exceptionally well in China and Japan and still be something of a loss. Sure, if Blade Runner 2049 plays like WB's Kong: Skull Island or Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in China, then it’s a slightly different conversation. Had Blade Runner 2049 done better in North America, it wouldn’t be holding out or a miracle overseas to merely match the global gross of Annabelle: Creation. But the controversial Scarlett Johansson sci-fi actioner, a film that shares tonal and narrative similarities to Blade Runner 2049, earned $129m overseas.
