So what about the crucial question for passengers - what this reform will actually mean for ticket prices and your wallet? Until now, most rail services have been run by private firms awarded franchises by the Government. Instead, the Government has pledged to simplify the fares system and offer digital ticketing and more flexibility. Not a single one of those requirements is to actually make the fares cheaper. Rather than making fares cheaper, this could make them easier to use and navigate - and to get the cheapest fare on offer.
