Insiders say that for the past two years, Rahul Gandhi has been taking all important decisions in the Congress and it is also the time when party president Sonia Gandhi has preferred to take back seat. Sonia Gandhi has been the Congress president all this while and practically shielded Rahul Gandhi from all kinds of attacks. But, there was no motherly figure protecting Sonia Gandhi, when she became the Congress president in 1998. Rahul Gandhi was allowed to have his say, under Sonia Gandhi, first at the Youth Congress and then at the national level. Sonia Gandhi has not chaired any meeting of significance in the last six months allowing Rahul Gandhi to decorate the stage for his own elevation.
