These rumours were fuelled by a study from Egypt which claimed deaths of Covid patients in hospital dropped by 90 per cent when ivermectin was used. Years ago, when I was making a TV series on the search for modern medicines, I looked at life-saving drugs that started out with a different purpose. Chemotherapy drugs, for example, originated from the poison gas attacks of World War I. The chemotherapy drugs that followed — and which are used today — have the same basic mechanism: they are cytotoxic, poisonous to dividing cells. Separately, we may also soon discover whether melatonin, widely used to treat insomnia, can help Covid patients, too.
