What is women's writing? Publishing insiders discuss power of female voices


“We’ll have a definitive answer of what women’s writing is by the end of this.”Emily Gould, novelist and founder of Emily Books, was kidding of course, but the joke resonated. What is, or is not, women’s writing would not be completely determined in this one evening. Emily Books, founded by Emily Gould and Ruth Curry, turned five this year, and in recognition, they put together a symposium to explore what exactly is women’s writing. It’s difficult to remember that books are not the sum of the publishing industry: there are assistants and editors, largely female. If the panel didn’t quite provide the answer to what women’s writing is, the reading picked up where it left off.
