Kenneth’s mother, Alice Knopp, was born in 1866 in Frating, Essex, a few miles from Colchester. Kenneth Knopp/Wheatley now became Kenneth Salter – the name he used for the rest of his life. He added that, after the war, Kenneth was drunken and brutal to his wife. The wherewithal was money left by his mother, Alice, who may have got it from family connections in London. An “illegitimate” Jewish Knopp.
