The average award for whiplash, usually after a car crash, is more than €20,000 ALAMYThe average whiplash payout made through the state’s injury assessment body in the first half of this year was about five times larger than the equivalent court payout in England and Wales, new figures have shown. A report by the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB) showed that the average award was €20,037. The average court payout in the UK is €3,798. Earlier this year the Personal Injuries Commission (PIC), a body examining issues that surround the rising cost of insurance, found that personal injury compensation payments for whiplash injuries made in Irish courts were typically 4.4 times higher than those in England and Wales, at €19,862.
