Why 95 per cent of women do not report sexual assaults — in their own words: new report

VANCOUVER—Too often, survivors of sexual assault choose not to report their experiences. A new report is shining light on the barriers to reporting sexual assault for women. It uses their own words with the aim of guiding transforamation in the legal system. Sexual assault is the most under-reported crime in Canada, according to Alana Prochuk, the report author and organization’s manager of public legal education. Between 2016 and 2017, the sexual assault reporting rate spiked by 8 per cent while the unfounded rate — meaning the offence did not occur or was not attempted — dropped from 19 to 14 per cent.
