Yes, TikTok collects way too much user data. The case has been pushed in the media that TikTok is blatant spyware, collecting and exfiltrating data from user phones that extends beyond normal social media. Apple and Google’s silence is suddenly deafening. We have allowed a situation to develop where social media captures extraordinary levels of information on us—and so we need to regulate and monitor where a social media platform is not subject to our laws. We can have a sensible debate about the need to regulate a social media platform based in an adversarial state.
