Why is Hurricane Florence so intense this far north?

Hurricane Florence, a potentially catastrophic storm barreling toward the southeastern U.S., has intensified further north than a typical storm of its size. Florence is approximately 370 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and around 845 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, as of 2 p.m. “For Florence, specifically, this was not a result of warmer ocean temperatures. In fact ocean temperatures were near normal, or slightly below average," Ventrice said. In the case of Florence, there was an upper-level trough that helped to fuel the monster hurricane’s rapid intensification.
