Why the U.S. lost its way on the Nile


GERD Insight: Grand Nile compromise—a Sisyphean task? Egypt and Ethiopia are unlikely to strike terms over GERD without agreeing a new legal framework governing the Nile Basin. But far from being a diplomatic victory, U.S. interference in the Nile dispute is ill-advised. To start making amends, the Treasury should step back from leading the diplomatic effort to resolve the Nile dispute, let alone intervening to defend Egyptian interests. The AU and other regional bodies can be explored as the best platforms for a mutually beneficial outcome to the Nile dispute.
