Up until 1845, US states used to hold the presidential election on different days. This made instant communication possible nationwide, and led to fears that the results of the election in one state would influence people yet to vote in another. In response to this, Congress decided to set a national US Election Day on which everyone would vote together. is in favour of changing the day of the US election to the weekend. There have also been suggestions of making Election Day a federal holiday.
