Will ECC be scrapped? Nitin Gadkari questions Delhi on green initiatives amid levy charge

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that during a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), he questioned them about the steps being taken toward green initiatives while continuing to charge the levy. He urged the officials to scrap the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) imposed on commercial vehicles travelling in and out of Delhi. Gadkari proposed that the Delhi government could instead provide ₹800–900 crore as grants-in-aid to the corporation rather than retaining the levy. Introduced by the Supreme Court of India in 2015, the ECC is imposed on commercial vehicles entering Delhi to curb air pollution. The apex court revoked a 10-year-old exemption that allowed commercial vehicles transporting essential goods to enter Delhi without paying the ECC.
