Herrera is coming off a down year, and the Giants ought to see if the Phillies would be amenable to swapping him for a package based around Will Smith. As nice a weapon Smith is, the Phillies would be trading three to five years of a solid or better outfielder for one year of Smith. It’s easy enough to imagine Herrera, 27, snapping back to a 3-4 win player, for the next few seasons, and if he’s that, his contract is worth Smith and more. Still, if the Phillies would be content with a spaghetti at the wall approach in centerfield, Smith should get the Giants more than halfway to Herrera. With above average power and speed, Williams could offer similar value to Herrera, and he’s controlled through 2023.
