Tesla Motors’ lead in the market for premium electric cars is likely to be short-lived as German (and perhaps Chinese) competitors quickly marshal their resources and unveil competitive products. In 2025, Tesla will have a huge market lead at 1.2 million a year, with the Germans still at just under 15,000 and GM at 80,000. Industry forecaster IHS Auto said this massively underestimates the likely outcome for the Germans and overestimates Tesla’s capabilities. IHS Auto reckons BMW, Mercedes and the VW Group will sell 135,000 of their 200-mile plus electric cars a year by 2021, and 388,000 by 2025. Tesla will reach only 460,000 by 2021 and 489,000 by 2025.
