President Trump’s late condemnation of the racist groups supporting the rally — and his subsequent undercutting of that condemnation — are roiling cable news and newspaper opinion pages. Broadly speaking, the Marist poll falls in line with other recent surveys. The Monmouth poll and a more recent Gallup poll include a period after those protests but weren’t fully conducted afterward. What the Marist poll reinforces is that Trump’s position was weak before his shaky response to the racist violence of the weekend.
