The Golden Globes – a boozy, less serious, more adventurous, and more wide-ranging awards show – has traditionally marked the beginning of Hollywood’s Oscar gauntlet of self-congratulatory statue-focused gatherings. Traditionally around this time of year, after a few weeks of coma, rehab and Palm Springs poolside margaritas, awards strategists have recovered enough to begin planning for the next Oscar season. Goodness knows there are still plenty of awards shows desperately seeking a reason to exist. On top of all that, a lot fewer people watched awards shows this winter, including the Globes, as Forbes colleague Madeline Berg pointed out this week.
