Late-night television is an unfriendly environment for a female host, and it has been that way since the days of Steve Allen and Jack Parr. So while you could say Late Night, Mindy Kaling’s first feature-length screenplay, has impeccable timing, you could actually say the same in any decade. Late Night never places its female host on too high a pedestal; it not only addresses Katherine’s reluctance to work with other women, but knocks her down several pegs when a sex scandal erupts. Still, with Kaling’s sharp script and Thompson’s fizzy, acerbic persona, Late Night is first and foremost a comedy. An Amazon release, Late Night maintains the confidence and gloss of a big-budget studio film, but also feels like a snappy callback to both His Girl Friday and the previously mentioned The Devil Wears Prada.
