With hospitals nearly overwhelmed, officials say California ‘cannot afford’ another holiday surge

Vanessa Walker, a medical director at Sutter Health in Northern California, said the surge is evident not only at big urban hospitals such as those in Los Angeles. The U.S. government has been seeking an agreement that would provide an additional 100 million vaccine doses of that vaccine for the second quarter of next year. Under an existing contract, Pfizer has committed to providing the government with 100 million doses by the end of March. Pfizer as recently as October had been urging the government to lock down an additional 100 million doses of its vaccine. But that did not happen, and when administration officials recently said they wanted to buy another 100 million, Pfizer said it had already committed most of its supply to other countries.
