John Bain was a familiar sight around the Central Otago town and often slept at the Upper Clutha Rugby Ground. The managers at Link Upper Clutha and Community Networks Wānaka declined to comment. The Wānaka Community Networks website has information on services available, including the foodbank, financial advice, government agencies like Work and Income, referrals to social workers, and mental health providers.
