Alberto Carvalho proposed shortening the district’s winter holidays from three weeks to two, but the plan failed due to pushback from teachers and many parents. She pays her mother $800 a month to provide necessary care for her children, all of whom attend LAUSD schools. Magnolia Science Academy, a charter elementary school in Northridge, is trying to bridge the gap by offering free camp over school holidays, including winter break.
