Yellowknife's only movie theatre is shutting down next month. In a statement Tuesday, the owner of the Capitol Theatre said the business has been struggling, and the lease has not been renewed. "The residual effect of the pandemic combined with the wildfire evacuation has made continued operation of the theatre untenable," reads the statement from Canadian Cinemas Ltd. The independent theatre had been forced to close for five months during the pandemic, and afterward it struggled to keep afloat. The company says gift certificates, passes and coupons can be used anytime before then, but they cannot be exchanged for cash.
