But here’s the catch: Monthly payments are not actually going to decrease. That means they could pay their loans down faster, but they won’t have more money in their pockets now. The biggest benefit may be to borrowers who have paused their monthly payments because of hardship, or may in the future. The waiver will not apply to student loans issued through state agencies and private lenders, including Sallie Mae.
