Yet the cooler southern end known as Carneros, where San Francisco Bay meets Napa and Sonoma, is a delightful bastion of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine. The toasty, rich sparkling wine, aged at least two years on the lees, speaks to the brand’s roots as a Cava producer. Domaine Carneros, perched on a hilltop near the Carneros Resort, evocative of a French château, specializes in sparkling wine. Advance bookings are preferable but not required if the tasting room is slow, though it’s good practice to call ahead. Visits are by appointment as the tasting room occupies a small historic adobe home, carefully restored and decorated by local architect Ken Fulk.
