Zia's unfinished canal excavation to be completed under Tarique Rahman's leadership: AneePhoto : BSSLAKSHMIPUR, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Water Resources Minister Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee today said the unfinished canal excavation works initiated by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman will be completed under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. "The canal excavation programme was a revolutionary initiative of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, but it remained unfinished. Completing it according to President Zia's original plan will help build a self-reliant Bangladesh," he said. Anee said the government is implementing irrigation systems in agriculture and undertaking excavation and re-excavation of rivers, canals, and other water bodies to enhance water flow, protect biodiversity, and reduce waterlogging. BNP lawmaker of Lakshmipur-1 Shahadat Hossen Selim and Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan, among others, were present at the event.
