In Angela Merkel, his country of birth has an Iron Chancellor displaying crucial leadership – while Britain is lumbered with an incompetent flip-flopper in Boris Johnson. Build, build, build a decent, fairer, prosperous country feels beyond the dithering architect of lost lives, with care home scandals, PPE shortages, missed testing targets, still-shut schools and an app that proved to be the square wheel of technology. Johnson prefers to slobber constantly over the future because he can’t justify the present or defend the past. Labour is wrestling with how to stop slippery Johnson exploiting Covid-19 as a Year Zero moment; a fresh start for him and the Tories. Opposition parties are more likely to defeat Johnson working together than against each other, although it would be pointless to minimise their rivalries and enmities.
