For Christian booksellers, any good news about Bible sales has been few and far between. Last year, total sales of Bibles in the UK reached £6.3m, £3.61m up on 2019 sales. “It’s definitely younger people who are seeking some sort of spirituality – they want to understand the world and themselves better,” she said. Coco Gauff beats Iga Swiatek but Poland best US to reach United Cup final
A statement victory for Coco Gauff over her great rival Iga Swiatek proved to be insufficient to the American’s hopes of leading her team into the final of the United Cup. Poland showed their depth in an excellent team performance to close out a 2-1 win over the United States at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney. Gauff put together a brilliant performance against Swiatek, winning 6-4, 6-2 to register her fourth consecutive win over the six-time grand slam champion. Gauff is 21 and Swiatek 24, yet the pair have already faced each other on 16 occasions. The world No 1 will face Marta Kostyuk after the Ukrainian dismantled Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed, 6-0, 6-3.

Small states, such as Trinidad and Tobago, do not get the luxury of moral binaries when caught between rival strongmen. In the end, the hard truth is this: small states such as ours are not geopolitical actors but geopolitical spaces.

A protester has climbed on to the balcony of the Iranian embassy in central London and pulled down the country’s flag during an anti-regime demonstration. Social media footage appeared to show a man replacing the flag with the pre-Islamic revolution lion and sun flag, often used by opposition groups in the country. The Iranian embassy later posted a picture on its X account of the flag back in place with the caption “Iran’s flag is flying high”. Greenlanders “don’t want to be Americans” and must decide the future of the Arctic island themselves, politicians in the self-governing Danish territory have said, after Donald Trump warned the US would “do something whether they like it or not”. “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders,” said the group, which included the island’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. At a meeting with oil and gas executives at the White House earlier on Friday, Trump had said Greenland was crucial for US national security. But Trump told reporters on Friday that a lease agreement was not enough. “Countries have to have ownership and you defend ownership, you don’t defend leases,” he said.

Nicaraguan authorities arrest dozens for reportedly supporting Maduro capture
Authorities in Nicaragua have arrested at least 60 people for reportedly celebrating or expressing support for the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, a human rights watchdog group and local media outlets said Friday. Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega and his wife, vice president Rosario Murillo, are staunch allies of Maduro, who was captured by US military personnel in Caracas last Saturday and taken to New York to face trial on drug and weapons charges. According to Confidencial, a Nicaraguan newspaper published outside the country, the arrests took place under a “state of alert” ordered by Murillo following Maduro’s capture – including surveillance in neighbourhoods and on social media. La Prensa, another local newspaper, said the arrests occurred due to “posts in favor” of the US operation. The US president said he had cancelled planned military action in recognition that the authorities in Caracas had released “large numbers” of prisoners and were “seeking peace”.

Yet the issue of an alternative leadership for Iran remains unresolved. Many Iranians, eager to end the 47-year-long rule of the clerics, still view a return to monarchical rule with suspicion. Pahlavi’s supporters, including on the foreign satellite channels, highlight the many calls for the return of the shah being heard in the crowds. One Iranian described Iran as living in an era of no manifesto politics. Either way, the current reformist Iranian leadership, struggling to understand the evaporation of the nationalism created by the 12-day war in June, has few solutions left.
