Germany is to get Algerian gas with the signing on 8 February of a contract tying gas producer Sonatrach to Leipzig-based gas trader VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH (VNG H&V). VNG is the first German company to procure gas from Algeria, opening more opportunities for Sonatrach to expand into the lucrative German market. Germany is now added to Sonatrach’s current list of clients, which expansion in Western Europe accelerated with the reduction of the Russian presence as a gas supplier amid the war in Ukraine. Since the European energy crisis erupted in February 2022, Algerian gas has increasingly been coveted by European countries due to its availability and proximity. Italy has been the first country to lobby Algeria to increase its gas delivery, creating a model that other Europeans appear to be following.

But Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping and American and British retaliation have thrown the peace process “up in the air”, said Farea Al-Muslimi, a research fellow at Chatham House’s Middle East and North Africa Programme. “Peace in Yemen requires international and regional commitments different than those that exist now,” Mr. Muslimi said. However, Majid Al-Madhaji, of the Sanaa Center for Strategic Studies think-tank, said that with the flare up in the Red Sea, “a peace plan no longer has a place on the discussion table”. It has not joined a U.S.-led naval coalition to deter Houthi attacks on shipping and expressed “great concern” following the first round of strikes by the U.S. and Britain, calling for “restraint”. “The international community is less likely to support a Yemeni peace plan due to concerns about rewarding the Houthis for Red Sea attacks, thus freezing the UN-led and U.S.-backed peace process,” he said.

By 2016, Ismaila had established CoLab, marking it as Kaduna’s inaugural tech hub and the second in the northern region of Nigeria. On a bright afternoon in 2018, Pablo observed two young individuals entering the barbershop donned hoodies that bore the CoLab and Python logos. Despite this support, persuading young individuals to dedicate themselves to learning technological skills remains an arduous task. His efforts have already impacted around a thousand young individuals, equipping them with coding and digital marketing skills. This academic presence has historically supplied a steady stream of young talent into Lagos’ tech scene, a dynamic yet to be replicated in other regions.
