Roland Ratsiraka, a prominent opposition candidate, emphasized that the necessary conditions for a transparent and widely accepted presidential election have not been met. His brief statement underscores the opposition’s scepticism about the integrity of the electoral process. Hajo Andrianainarivelo, another opposition candidate, clarified that their objection is not a complete boycott of the elections, as they are active participants as candidates. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the November 16 date, asserting that the election, as currently planned, falls short of meeting the necessary standards. Ten out of 12 opposition candidates in Madagascar on Tuesday called on voters to shun a presidential election scheduled for Thursday, amid concerns about the vote’s regularity.

Moroccan utility system construction company ‘Falcon Capital Dakhla’ has signed a partnership deal with French HDF Energy to build a green hydrogen production plant for a total investment of $2 billion in the kingdom coastal region of Dakhla. The deal was signed by Majid Slimani, founder and president of ‘Falcon Capital Dakhla’ and Damien Havard, Chief Executive Officer of the French company. Damien Havard argued that the partnership deal represents the perfect synergy between two complementary entities, enabling Morocco to produce some of the most competitive green hydrogen in the world. The French company, founded in 2012, is a pioneer in large-scale green hydrogen infrastructure and high-power fuel cells. The company announced in October 2023 during the Africa Climate Summit held in Nairobi (Kenya) the commencement of development studies for the first green hydrogen power plant in the eastern African country.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced on Thursday that it had reached an agreement on a $938 million (€864 million) loan for Kenya, an East African country facing liquidity problems and economic difficulties. Kenya is under pressure "on its liquid assets, mainly due to the large Eurobond maturing" in June 2024 in the amount of $2 billion, according to the IMF, which notes, however, a recovery in the agriculture and tourism sectors. William Ruto announced that the country would repay a first tranche of $300 million in December. If approved, Kenya will have immediate access to $682 million, according to the financial institution. The cost of servicing the country's public debt, mainly to China, has risen sharply with the collapse of the currency.

We like to keep history as we’ve learned it in a headlock, to make sure it doesn’t shift or change. They turn the world into a fixed field of safe-spots and blanks, an us-them weave of gates and fences. One of the many — many — benefits of much-maligned “wokeness” has been its message to relax the hold, toss the charts or, better, revise them: explore blanks, rethink fences. It’s thanks to this more free-breathing approach to history, including art history, that we’re getting a challenger of an exhibition like “Africa & Byzantium,” which opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Sunday. At the same time, as its title suggests, the show confuses — in a good way — certain expectations about who made what, and what came from where.

Ever since Morocco normalized diplomatic relations with Israel in late 2020, the government and the royal Cabinet of King Mohamed VI have had to engage in an awkward balancing act. As they nurtured fast-growing political, economic and military relations with Israel, authorities had to simultaneously portray Rabat’s official position as remaining actively pro-Palestinian. Morocco’s stance, like that of other countries that signed up to the Abraham Accords, was always going to be a challenge. For years, the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis has been marked by sporadic clashes between Israeli forces and armed groups in Gaza, the ongoing encroachment of illegal Israeli settlements amid violence in the West Bank, and diminishing hope for a genuine political resolution. But after the brutal attacks perpetrated by Hamas on Israeli civilians and military personnel on Oct. 7 and the ruthless and escalating war unleashed by the Israeli military on Gaza in response, Morocco’s stance is close to untenable.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) lifted financial sanctions imposed in 2022 following the coup that ousted President Ali Bongo. The sanctions had a significant impact on Gabon’s economy, limiting the country’s access to international financing and disrupting its trade and investment flows. The removal of sanctions is a crucial development, as it allows the country to resume receiving loans and grants from the AfDB for its domestic projects. This will boost economic growth and create opportunities for its citizens. The talks in the Republic of Congo focused on the economic situation in Gabon and the AfDB’s support for its recovery and development.
