Morocco’s water reserves have received a significant boost following heavy rainfall between December 15 and 17, with national dam storage increasing by 119 million cubic meters, raising the overall filling rate from 31.5% to 32.2%. According to official figures, total reserves now stand at 5.4 billion cubic meters, compared to 5.281 billion cubic meters earlier in the week. Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah received an additional 25.36 million cubic meters (73.4% full), Al Wahda had an additional +15.32 million cubic meters (42.1% full) and Ahmed Al Hanssali received 12.45 million cubic meters (14.1% full). While the current fill rate remains below historical averages, authorities are optimistic that continued rainfall could further improve reserves in the coming weeks. With 5.4 billion cubic meters now stored, Morocco is better positioned to manage water resources during the dry season, reinforcing its long-term strategy for sustainable water management.

A drone attack on a busy market in Sudan’s North Darfur state killed 10 people over the weekend, first responders said, without saying who was responsible. The attack comes as fighting intensified elsewhere in the country, leading aid workers to be evacuated on Sunday from Kadugli, a besieged, famine-hit city in the south. AdvertisementThe North Darfur Emergency Rooms Council, one of hundreds of volunteer groups coordinating aid across Sudan, said a drone strike hit Al-Harra market in the RSF-controlled town of Malha on Saturday. The council did not identify who carried out the attack, which it said had sparked “fire in shops and caused extensive material damage”. The war’s current epicentre is South Kordofan and clashes have escalated in Kadugli, the state capital, where a drone attack last week killed eight people as they attempted to flee the army-controlled city.

This post is part of our special coverage of the 2025 African Cup of Nations . If we were to apply the cliché of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object to this situation, the unstoppable force is unquestionably Moroccan football. That alone hints at the astronomical rise of Moroccan football across all age groups and categories. In the immediate aftermath of that triumph, Senegal went on to win the U17 AFCON, U20 AFCON, and the 2023 African Nations Championship. Still, such upheaval would hardly be conducive to calm World Cup preparation.

Mali and Zambia will meet at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations for the second time when they open their Group A campaign at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca on Monday. Their only previous meeting at the AFCON finals came in the semi-finals of the 1994 tournament on 6 April 1994 at Stade El Menzah in Tunis, Tunisia, over 31 years ago. That defeat remains Mali’s joint-heaviest loss at an AFCON finals, alongside a 4-0 semi-final defeat to Morocco in 2004. Overall, the two teams have met six times, with Zambia winning twice, Mali once, and three matches ending in draws. For both nations, this will be their first AFCON appearance in Morocco as hosts, with neither featuring when the Moroccans hosted the tournament in 1988.
