A Gauteng based dairy product manufacturer is turning to a gas-fired combined heat and power system to deal with loadshedding and put it on a path to net-zero by 2050. The CHP system would allow Danone to recover waste heat in the form of steam and hot water, further reducing their carbon emissions. The IPP has selected Clarke Energy as EPC/O&M partner which will supply a 5MW combined heat and power solution. Libya Floods: Latest Update
By Rim Taher:Flash flooding in east Libya caused by Storm Daniel tore through the coastal city of Derna, leaving upwards of 2,300 dead, 10,000 missing and entire neighbourhoods in ruins. – Dams burst –On Sunday afternoon, Storm Daniel made landfall on Libya’s east coast after earlier lashing Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. – Vulnerable city –Figures provided by the emergency services of the internationally recognised government in Tripoli say Storm Daniel killed more than 2,300 people in Derna alone. Libya descended into chaos after the 2011 NATO-backed revolution that overthrew 42 years of dictatorial rule by Moamer Kadhafi. A myriad of militias exploited this chaos and divisions between east and west, including the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia which based itself in Derna.

Production starts at Shenzi North
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Oil and gas major Woodside has started production at the Shenzi North project in the deep-water US Gulf of Mexico. Shenzi North is a two-well subsea tieback that takes advantage of the existing Shenzi infrastructure to increase production capacity of the asset. The Shenzi platform produces both oil and gas with a production capacity of 100 000 bbl/d and 50-million cubic standard feet per day. “First production from Shenzi North shows how we are leveraging existing infrastructure to increase production and provide attractive returns from our Gulf of Mexico business. Woodside holds a 72% interest in the Shenzi conventional oil and gas field as operator and Repsol holds the remaining 28% interest.

The Nuclear Security Debate Has a Major Blindspot
To begin with, a massive, years-long global civil society campaign highlighting the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons culminated in the signing in 2018 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Nuclear deterrence experts believe that nuclear weapons make great power war less likely and, as a result, the world safer. They want to update and modernize nuclear arsenals, and the nuclear industry is engaged in a propaganda campaign to ensure support for such efforts. In contrast, nuclear disarmament activists view nuclear weapons as a scourge. Between these two extremes sits the nonproliferation crowd, who view nuclear weapons technology as an inescapable reality, but one that gets more dangerous the wider it spreads.

What the Morocco earthquake means for its economy
On the night of Friday, September 8th, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Morocco. The earthquake also struck the heart of Morocco’s tourism industry weeks ahead of peak season and just as the sector started recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. The North African country’s economy has already shrunk a lot this year. Tourism contributes strongly to Morocco’s economy, along with agriculture and trade with the European Union. However, the earthquake left the crown jewel of Morocco’s tourism industry—the ancient city of Marrakesh’s labyrinthine core called the medina— relatively unscathed.

Tunis/Tunisia — Speaker of the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP), Brahim Bouderbala, on Monday, sent a condolence message to the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Salah, following the torrential floods caused by storm Daniel that hit several regions in eastern Libya, leaving victims, missing and injured. Quoted in a parliamentary press release, the Speaker of the ARP, on his own behalf and on behalf of the members of the Legislative Assembly, expressed his sincere feelings of compassion and sympathy with the Libyan people in this harsh ordeal, praying to Almighty God to grant His infinite mercy to the victims of this tragedy and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Earlier in the day, President Kaïs Saied gave instructions to coordinate with the Libyan authorities in the rescue and care of the injured, and called for the deployment of men and means to come to the aid of the stricken Libyan people. A powerful Mediterranean storm called "Daniel", which has already dumped unprecedented amounts of rain in Greece and Turkey, moved between Sunday and Monday with full force towards eastern Libya, causing massive and impressive flooding.
