The Hellenic Ornithological Society on Wednesday announced the extinction of a migratory bird, the slender-billed curlew, that had found a safe haven in northern Greece’s wetlands on its treacherous annual journey from Europe to Africa. According to the society, the species’ presence in Greece was first reported on the island of Corfu in 1857 and was documented another 104 times until 1999, mostly in the Evros and Axios deltas and in Porto Lagos in northern Greece. “A slender-billed curlew observed in Messolongi on May 3, 1999 (by J.Y. Guillosson) marks the last recorded sighting of the species in Greece,” it said. The loss of the slender-billed curlew is the first known global bird extinction from mainland Europe, North Africa and West Asia, according to the expert publication, BirdLife International.

The South African government says it is preparing to present an intervention regarding the proposed tariff hike by Eskom. The power utility has asked the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to approve its multi-year price determination. “I want to say – with a degree of confidence – that we will get to a situation where we don’t realise a 36, 40% tariff increase. What that percentage [tariff increase] that will be, Nersa will make that determination,” he said. Tariff reaction: Akin to paying for Eskom failuresLiziwe McDaid, Strategic Lead at The Green Connection, said that with this latest increase proposal, Eskom is basically asking the people of South Africa to pay for its mistakes.

Gunshots, screams, eerie laughter: South Korea's border island Ganghwa is being bombarded nightly with blood-curdling sounds, part of a new campaign by the nuclear-armed North that is driving residents to despair. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year declared Seoul his "principal enemy" and has ramped up weapons testing and built closer military ties with Russia. The isolated and impoverished North is known to be extremely sensitive about its citizens gaining access to South Korean pop culture. In August, just weeks after South Korea resumed K-pop broadcasts in response to Pyongyang floating trash-carrying balloons south, a North Korean soldier defected by crossing the heavily fortified border on foot. Choi Hyoung-chan, a 60-year-old resident, said the South Korean government had failed to protect vulnerable civilians on the frontier.

Egypt, which surprised the market with massive liquefied natural gas tenders this year, has abruptly turned away several imported cargoes this month. Lower demand from Egypt now also frees up more cargoes for Europe, where cold weather has bolstered demand and prices. There are no technical issues with the floating LNG terminal that Egypt has leased this year to address acute power shortages, the person said. The Jordanian terminal is used for additional imports into Egypt and is connected to that nation by pipeline. Egypt’s LNG imports soared this year as a hot summer raised demand and domestic production of gas declined.

Jay pointed out the fires to Timothy, his national partner. “Each of those fires represent a family or a group of people who probably haven’t heard the good news,” Jay told Timothy. With boldness, he told his friends the creation to Christ story, modeling for Abel what faithful sharing looked like. Today, Timothy and Abel continue to share the good news with those around them. In time, Abel confessed his faith in the Lord, and Timothy continued teaching him and encouraging him to share with others.
