Court cases are becoming “longer and longer” and should be more concise, a Supreme Court judge said as he retired after two decades on the bench. Judge Peter Charleton said he and others have made efforts to shorten hearings, as “consision is needed in our courts” but “we are not there” yet. He compared Irish courts’ management of legal cases to how cases are run in the United States. The judge, who has served in the Supreme Court since 2014 and on the bench since 2006, said he has always noticed litigants in the Four Courts who “lean their heads against the stone walls” while waiting for their cases to be heard. During the tributes, speakers said Charleton wrote a significant number of legal books and articles alongside his practice as a barrister and while a judge.

The week before Donegal played Kerry in the 2012 All-Ireland quarter-final, which was the counties first ever championship meeting, Jim McGuinness spoke about an ambition that extended a lot further than just wanting to beat Kerry; McGuinness also wanted Donegal to be more like Kerry. McGuinness has always taken huge pride in how his teams have grown, fostered, developed and enhanced Donegal’s unique identity, both in terms of style and personality. But his background, especially in how McGuinness learned as much throughout his playing career from what Donegal often did wrong than what they did right, made it easier for him to look to Kerry for inspiration.

A “perfect storm” is predicted for commuters in two of the biggest towns in East Cork as thousands more homes are built in the coming years and the already creaking road network becomes totally overwhelmed. This would make it the largest town in County Cork. At a recent Cork County Council meeting, Social Democrats councillor Eamonn Horgan said: “As of the 2022 census, the population of Midleton was 13,906. This would make it the largest town in County Cork. Mayor of County Cork, independent councillor Mary Linehan-Foley, said there needs to be a complete overhaul of public transport in the region if they're to stave off traffic mayhem.

While largely unheard of, political instability and rogue regulatory bodies have led to an influx of unlicensed sports betting and online gambling websites in Ireland. But to this day, AOFA maintains a register of dozens of financial companies, including banks, insurance firms, and notably, gambling sites. Despite these warnings, many gambling websites continue to boast their Anjouan-issued licenses as a badge of legitimacy, including those increasingly targeting Irish consumers. But its illegal operation in Ireland has failed to dissuade several major influencers prevalent among online sports circles from promoting the company. In recent years, the Rainbet logo has been plastered in social media videos and advertisements targeting Irish customers, particularly across online sports circles.

A demoralised Ireland captain, Nathan Collins, feels like the national team are currently in the “gutter” off the back of Thursday’s penalty heartbreak against Czechia, which ended a World Cup dream for this group of players. And as he reflected on the concession of a relatively soft and simple goal from a set-piece, which dragged the Czechs back to 2-2 and gave them the chance to take the match to extra-time and the successful penalty shoot-out, Collins admits those defensive lapses have to be eradicated if the team are to qualify.

Wing-back Tadhg Devaney finished strongly, adding to an original point with two more fantastic efforts to get his side to that 3-13 tally. Two points from Ryan Connolly either side of this streak kept Galway afloat and six behind at the interval (0-8 to 0-2). Points from Bobby Lenehan, Cathal Nerney and Joshua Coyne extended Roscommon's lead early in the second half despite playing against the breeze that aided them in the first period. Elsewhere, Mayo toppled Leitrim at Páirc Seán MacDiarmada, making it two losses on the bounce for the Wild Rose County.

The Taoiseach has said there will be a review into the directly-elected mayor legislation “before the end of the year” after Limerick's office holder John Moran accused the Government of “washing its hands” of the issue. Speaking to media in Limerick, Micheál Martin said the direct mandate for the mayor was a “major departure” in terms of local governance. “Very often there can be tensions between the chief executive officer and councillors, but ultimately people have to work together. “It was my understanding the legislation was a three-year review when it was legislated but it's one we’re keeping an eye on,” he said. Earlier this week John Moran accused the Government of “washing its hands” of the issue.

The study found the braking distance of a car travelling at 70mph with good tyres is 96 metres. But this increases to 111.5 metres if the driver is distracted by their phone, and if the car has worn tyres that are still legal, this increases to 123 metres. The motoring brand created a video to show the difference in stopping distance between a car with good tyres, a car with worn tyres, and a car with good tyres but the driver is using a phone. It shows the vehicle with worn tyres smashing through a barrier, that the car with good tyres would have stopped before – showing just how dangerous it is to drive on UK roads with illegal tyre tread. “What this research shows is that tyres worn down to the current legal limit can actually have an even greater impact on stopping distance.
