In September, Libya was struck with devastating floods that resulted in thousands of deaths and caused slight damage to the monuments at Cyrene, an ancient Greek city and archaeological site located near the Mediterranean coast. However, the waters have also washed away large amounts of stones and earth, revealing previously hidden structures. It was one of the most major cities of the ancient Greek world and thrived during the fourth century B.C. After water levels decreased, Libyan authorities headed over to Cyrene to determine what damage had been done to the ancient city. Already, a Roman wall in an area known as the Via Porticata has caved in, altering the course of ancient water channels.

Oct 16 (Reuters) - Libya's electoral commission has told the United Nations it can only start a countdown to national elections after resolution of the question of forming a new government, U.N. Libya envoy Abdoulaye Bathily said on Monday. A standoff between Libya's rival political and armed factions over the interim government has festered since early last year, leading to brief bouts of fighting. Subjecting the validity of the parliamentary elections to that of the presidential elections "puts the process at a high risk of disruption", Bathily said. Dbeibah has refused to step down until after an election and has rejected the legitimacy of the parliament, which was elected in 2014 for a two-year term. Bathily has also said elections require a unified government agreed upon by the major players in eastern and western Libya, which until now have shown little inclination to agree.

Bathily warned on Monday that disagreements over electoral laws and the formation of a new government carry the risk of another political crisis in Libya. (Eskinder Debebe/UN Photo/Handout via Xinhua)UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The top UN envoy for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, warned on Monday that disagreements over electoral laws and the formation of a new government carry the risk of another political crisis in Libya. The finalization of the electoral laws by the 6+6 Joint Committee offers the opportunity to break the current stalemate in Libya. Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled due to disagreements over election laws. In August 2022, the HoR-designated prime minister called on the Tripoli-based prime minister to hand over power, creating a political impasse.

“This war in Gaza is one of the most brutal wars I’ve ever experienced. It’s the first time I feel so terrified,” says Muhammad Qndeel, a Palestinian photojournalist from Gaza. For the last week, Close Up has been filming the Palestinian photojournalist as he documents the impact of Israel’s assault on Gaza. RIYADH: Libya is set to increase its oil production to two million barrels a day, according to its government. The commodity has been a key source of revenue for Libya, with oil production directly influencing global markets and prices. However, political instability and conflicts have led to fluctuating oil production. In July, the African nation announced the continuation of oil production at two major oil fields after a brief shutdown by demonstrators protesting the arrest of a former minister. “Operations have resumed in the Al-Sharara and Al-Fil oil fields ... after they were suspended,” said the Oil Ministry, part of the UN-brokered Government of National Unity based in Tripoli.
