Derna [Libya], October 12 (ANI/WAM): The UAE Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team, currently in Derna as part of their humanitarian mission on Libyan soil, have announced the launch of a 'central body identification line' in Derna, Libya. This was done in coordination with the General Authority for the Search and Identification of Missing Persons in Libya. The Emirati team are working in coordination with the relevant Libyan authorities to receive the families of the victims at the Bab Tobruk and Sheja centers. Dr. Issa Ahmed Al-Awadhi, the commander of the UAE team said that the 24-member team consist of highly qualified international experts, carrying out all stages of the identification process with high efficiency and professionalism. It is worth noting that the efforts of the UAE team have helped the Libyan authorities and teams uncover the locations of the victims of Hurricane Daniel, which struck the city on September 10, 2023.

TRIPOLI, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Thursday stressed the need to increase the pace of work to provide support for the people affected by the recent deadly floods in eastern Libya. Wafaa Al-Kilani, minister of social affairs, confirmed that a set of support and assistance measures will be made in accordance with the prime minister's plan in coordination with the Social Solidarity Fund, the statement said. Musa al-Magaryef, the Education Minister, confirmed that reinforcement of damaged schools in the stricken areas is ongoing according to schedule. On Sept. 10, Mediterranean storm Daniel triggered the largest and worst floods in decades in Libya. Thousands of people were killed and went missing, while the region's infrastructure was severely damaged.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecution, within the scope of the Tripoli Court of Appeal, took over investigation procedures into the seizure of funds from the Food and Drug Control Centre. The investigator inferred that the Assistant Director of the Tadhamon Bank, Girgarish Branch, was implicated with others to falsify the values of the financial sums he was ordered to pay as financial dues to the Food and Drug Control Centre’s employees. By doing this they deliberately added financial values in the tens of thousands then submit the payment order to deduct the financial values with the assistance of the bank branch manager. He issued a decision to arrest and bring in the assistant manager of the bank branch.

Not a month had passed after the disastrous floods in Derna and the cities and villages of eastern Libya before the world’s attention faded away. The gap between the official numbers of victims and those missing in the city of Derna is huge; there may be 10,000 missing persons, and the search and recovery operation is not helping in this respect. The biggest challenge is what is generally being called the “reconstruction” of the affected areas, the first of which is Derna. The USS Ronald Reagan and its battle group came to the southeastern South Korean port of Busan after participating in a trilateral South Korean-U.S.-Japanese maritime exercise earlier this week, the South Korean Defense Ministry said. It’s the first arrival of a U.S. aircraft carrier in South Korea in six months since the USS Nimitz docked at Busan in late March, the statement said. Such concerns flared after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia’s Far East last month to meet President Vladimir Putin and inspect key weapons-making facilities.

The Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has skirted around questions on whether there was a “cage” attached to a prison cell at the Corradino Correctional Facility. Nationalist MP Mark Anthony Sammut asked the minister whether there was a cage attached to a Division 5 prison cell aimed at isolating and humiliating unruly inmates. He also asked whether the cage was removed before an inspection by the Council of Europe’s anti-torture committee. Camilleri failed to answer the questions put to him, instead stating the CCF’s administration has enacted wide reforms at the prison facility. The inmate would be unable to roam freely in the division like the other prisoners or mingle with them.

The editor of Maltese-language news outlet Illum, Saviour Balzan, and Yendrick Cioffi, a former contributor to the publication, did not libel former prison director Col. Alexander Dalli by reporting the latter as having held a gun in an inmate’s mouth, a court has ruled. Another witness was a former prison guard, who also told the court that Dalli would carry a concealed firearm while inside the facility. Lawyer Andrew Saliba, representing Balzan and Cioffi in the proceedings, had argued that the publication of the story had been in the public interest. The presence of minor inaccuracies in a report does not invalidate the “public interest” defence, ruled the court. Buraq Air (UZ, Tripoli Mitiga) took delivery of its first A320-200 on October 6, 2023, after 5A-BAA (msn 5393) was ferried from Istanbul Atatürk to Tripoli Mitiga. The 10.9-year-old aircraft underwent pre-delivery maintenance at East Midlands and was ferried to Türkiye on September 21, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. It was then re-registered in Libya ahead of delivery to Buraq Air. It said, however, that it aims to become Libya's "number one" carrier with the "new" fleet.
