The NGO every week hands out over 600 portions of food, along with clothes, blankets and many other personal items, to homeless from many BA neighbourhoods. But many organizations claim that these figures are “unrealistic.”According to a 2015 report by the NGO Médicos del Mundo — which the Herald has seen — there are 16,753 homeless in Buenos Aires. But for experts it’s difficult to establish how many homeless people are living on the streets. In her book El robo de Buenos Aires, prestigious investigator and writer Gabriela Massuh explains that one out of four flats recently built in BA remain empty as a consequence of real-estate speculation.

Cacerolazo Against Utility Tariff Hikes ‹ The Argentina Independent
Thousands of people gathered in streets and squares across Argentina last night to protest against the recent hikes in utility tariffs. Last week, a Federal Court in La Plata ordered the gas hikes be suspended due to their impact on the population. Gas, electricity, and water prices have soared in recent months after the government reduced or removed subsidies that had kept utility bills contained for more than a decade. The hikes have caused problems for many, particularly low-income households, cultural and sports centres, small businesses, and independent theatres. The Indy joined the central protest at the Obelisco and here we share some images from a noisy night in the rain.

"I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence as my Vice Presidential running mate. Republican Donald Trump announced Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his vice presidential running mate on Friday, putting a seasoned conservative politician at his side who could help rally more party loyalists behind his White House bid. Republican sources said on Thursday that Trump had decided on Pence, but the campaign had not confirmed this until now. But he could help unify Republicans left divided by Trump's campaign to win the party presidential nomination for the Nov. 8 election. Trump had faced a midday deadline to announce Pence because the governor had to declare by then whether he would be on the ballot in his home state for re-election.

President Mauricio Macri faced yesterday the largest demonstrations against his administration yet, as sizeable crowds gathered in dozens of public squares and intersections decrying the steep rate hikes instituted by the government over the last few months. “In some regions with terrible temperature conditions there were hikes of up to a thousand percent,” he said. But Aranguren still has the backing of the president, and changes in the cabinet are not seen as likely in the short term. No single massive crowd was seen in the streets as in the country’s most historic political protests of the past, but overall thousands gathered in a more sparsely fashion across different local hubs.

Truck plows into crowd in Nice, France: at least 60 killed, 100 injured, driver dead

Almost exactly eight months ago Islamic State militants killed 130 people in Paris. US government agencies have received constant reports of Islamic State threats to attack France and those threats are regarded as current, a U.S. security official said. CNN said it has spoken to a witness, identified as an American pilot, who saw the truck ramming the crowd. Regional newspaper Nice Matin quoted its reporter at the scene saying there were many injured people and blood on the street.

It’s a simply a fridge.” Yet he states the the social fridge aims to go as far as possible, “to distribute social fridges as we receive them. Second half or extra time?
Thursday, July 14, 2016 Second half or extra time? As a beacon of optimism, the “second half” already seems to be over before mid-July and just a couple of days after the Bicentennial weekend. Not the ideal start for a “second half” which was supposed to have inflation trending downward to and below a monthly two percent. Plenty of gloom and doom, then, to suggest that the “second half” is over before it has begun but perhaps we should wait until the second half of the year after all — these next six months are sure to be a failure when measured against the expectations of the first half of 2016 but could end up looking quite good when compared to the current mood. It was always assumed that industrial take-off would have to await the advent of investment (in the “second half” at the earliest and probably beyond) but from the moment Macri came to office, both sides of the trade ledger were supposed to expand.
