The Election Commission (EC) has included plans to support political parties’ campaigns after the schedule announcement in its roadmap for the national election. The EC Secretariat unveiled the roadmap on Thursday, setting out the commission’s plans in preparation for the election. Asked about the polling date and schedule announcement, Akhtar did not give a specific date. This process is expected to be completed by Nov 20, 2025, about a month before the expected schedule announcement. This suggests the election schedule is likely to be declared in the second or third week of December.

Classes have been held at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) despite the announcement of a “complete shutdown” by engineering universities countrywide. At Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), classes and exams were suspended on Thursday as part of a movement over three demands. At Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), no classes or exams took place due to the weekly holiday. Students of SUST staged a protest, holding a symbolic funeral prayer for the interim government in response to the police attack on engineering students in Dhaka. KUET Student Welfare Director BM Ikramul Haque said, “Our students support the demands of the engineering students, but since KUET was closed for a long time, we have requested them to continue their academic activities.”

The government has promoted 268 civil servants from different cadres, including 192 from the administration cadre, to the rank of deputy secretary. Two separate gazette notifications were issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday announcing the promotions. One notification promoted six officials of the BCS (Foreign Service) cadre, who are currently serving as first secretaries in different Bangladesh missions abroad. The notification said if any “adverse or different” information is found against any official in the future, necessary amendments or cancellations of the order may follow. Deputy secretary appointees can submit their joining letters directly to the senior secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration or by email at [email protected], according to the circular.

The Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) has opposed the construction of Rabindra University’s permanent campus in Chalan Beel, warning it would cause severe ecological damage, block natural water flow, and adversely affect local communities. SM Mizanur Rahman, joint secretary of BAPA and member secretary of the “Save Chalan Beel Movement”, described the environmental importance of the wetland. “On one side of Chalan Beel is the Padma, on the other is the Jamuna. No construction permission should be granted in the beel under any form of pressure.”Prof Nur Mohammad Talukder said: “Rabindra University should have been established long ago. A 59-year-old man was arrested in relation to abusive social media messages sent to England defender Jess Carter during the women's European Championship last month, Cheshire Police said on Thursday. During Euro 2025, Carter said she had been the target of online racist abuse in Switzerland and even announced that she was stepping away from social media for the duration of the tournament, which England won by beating Spain on penalties in the final. The 27-year-old, who is Black, struggled in England's quarter-final win over Sweden as the Lionesses conceded two first-half goals, after which she was targeted. "Following the reports an investigation was launched by the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU), working in partnership with social media companies to identify the people responsible," Cheshire Police said in a statement. Carter received support from far and wide, including her teammates, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European soccer's governing body UEFA, her club Gotham FC and the National Women's Soccer League.

The Advisory Council has given in-principle approval to the draft Enforced Disappearance Prevention, and Redress Ordinance 2025, which prescribes the death penalty as the maximum punishment for enforced disappearance and abduction. Speaking at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said: “The ordinance on enforced disappearances was placed before the council [on Thursday] and has received policy approval. It will undergo further discussion before final approval.”According to him, Bangladesh became a signatory to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance on Aug 29 last year at the United Nations General Assembly. The draft ordinance has been prepared in alignment with that convention, and with the aim of enforcing the constitutional rights to life and personal liberty. The ordinance defines enforced disappearance as a criminal act and includes death penalty provisions.

Salman F Rahman, former advisor to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has been shown arrested in four cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of embezzling bank funds through irregularities and corruption. Prosecutor Mohammad Hafizur Rahman said the commission filed the cases against Salman this year. One case accuses him of taking a loan of Tk 4.96 billion in the name of a fake company, while another alleges he embezzled Tk 340 million and laundered Tk 763.9 million. Following the July Uprising, Salman was arrested from the Sadarghat area of Dhaka on Aug 13, 2024. Salman was later remanded in several cases tied to the mass uprising.

Police have taken former minister Latif Siddique and several others into custody following unrest at a Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) event. A training programme is being launched to prepare election officials for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary polls. Between 900,000 – 1 million election officials at the central and field levels will receive the training in stages from September to December. Mokbul Hossain, the father of Abu Sayed, a student of Rangpur's Begum Rokeya University who was killed during the July Uprising, wants to witness justice for his son's murder during his lifetime. A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, recorded his testimony on Thursday. Later, Prosecutor Md Mizanul Islam told reporters: "He [Abu Sayed’s father] named two suspects -- Shujon Chandra Ray and Amir Hossain. “He has asked for everyone involved to be brought to justice and wants the trial to be concluded in his lifetime." During his testimony, Abu Sayed's elderly father broke down in tears while talking about his son's death.

The driver, relying on Google Maps for directions, unknowingly guided the van onto the Somi-Upreda Bridge, which had been closed for several months. As the van entered the bridge, it became stuck and was quickly pulled into the river's strong currents, the police stated. All routes for crossing the river were closed due to the surge in the Banas River. The bodies of two women and a child have been recovered, and the search for the body of another child is under way.
