CHATTOGRAM, January 18, 2026 (BSS): A drug dealer named Md. Anwar (27) was arrested with 11 kgs of ganja in a special police operation in Satkania, Chattogram here today. An auto-rickshaw used for transporting the drugs was also seized from Anwar during the operation. Emran Hossain and a police force stopped an unregistered CNG auto-rickshaw in the Tech area of Dhupi Para and conducted a search. They found 11 kg of marijuana in 11 packets wrapped in blue polythene inside a white plastic bag on the back seat of the auto-rickshaw.

Police have recovered the body of a 27-year-old woman from a rented house in the Kalachandpur area of Gulshan in Dhaka, with her throat slit. Her body was recovered from a house in Kalachandpur Paschim Para on Saturday night. Confirming the incident, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Mofizul Islam said police reached the spot around 1am after receiving information and recovered the body. Police said two women lived in the rented house. Preliminary information suggests Sadia Akhter Mimi worked at a beauty parlour.

DHAKA, Jan 18, 2026 (BSS) - The Ministry of Land has launched a mobile application named ‘Bhumi’ to address the emerging situation and to ensure easy, safe and reliable land services for the citizens, said a ministry release here today. The government has introduced the app as organized fraud rings are creating fake/forged Dakhila, Khatian and DCR documents and deceiving ordinary citizens, the release said, adding that such activities are punishable offences under existing laws. By attaching QR codes similar to those used on Dakhila, Khatian and DCR issued through the land service system at https:/land.gov.bd/bhumi and iOS Link. Using the QR code verification feature of the app, citizens are requested to scan the QR codes displayed on Dakhila, Khatian and DCR documents to verify the accuracy of the related information and to refrain from using any QR scanner other than the ‘Bhumi’ app. Necessary legal action will be taken under existing laws against those involved in preparing fake or forged Dakhila, Khatian or DCR documents or against those who prepare or use such fake documents.

According to the district agriculture office, although the target for groundnut cultivation this season was set at 126 hectares, farmers have already cultivated groundnut on 127 hectares of land. Md Azgar Ali, a 50-year-old farmer from Char Ashtadhar village in Nakla upazila, said groundnut cultivation requires neither chemical fertilizers nor pesticides. Wholesalers and agricultural traders observed that groundnut cultivation is becoming increasingly profitable nationwide. Officials from the District Agriculture Department said groundnut cultivation is about twice as profitable as many traditional crops and that nut plants also serve as fodder for livestock.

On Sunday morning, AFP was able to connect to the internet from its Tehranoffice, though the vast majority of internet providers and mobile internetremain cut. Outgoing international calls have been possible since Tuesday, and textmessaging was restored Saturday morning. Late Saturday, the Tasnim news agency reported "the relevant authoritiesannounced that internet access would also be gradually restored", but gave nofurther details. DHAKA, Jan 18, 2026 (BSS) - The Ministry of Commerce has requested the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to suspend the duty-free benefit for the import of certain counts of yarn under the bonded warehouse scheme to protect local textile millers. In a letter to the revenue board last week, the ministry recommended the cancellation of the bond facility for the import of yarn ranging from 10 to 30 counts to safeguard local textile millers. The count refers to a measure of yarn thickness in the textile industry, indicating fineness. Yarn ranging from 10 to 30 counts is considered medium to coarse and is widely used in knitwear production. Earlier, on December 29, the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) urged the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission to request the government to either suspend the bonded warehouse benefit or impose a 20 percent tariff on the import of the widely consumed yarn.
