Chiefs of three services call on President
DHAKA, Nov 21, 2024 (BSS) - Chiefs of the three services this evening paid a courtesy call on President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban on the occasion of the Armed Forces Day. Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan met the President at 7pm. "During the meeting, the President, also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces was apprised of various activities of their respective forces," President's Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told BSS. President Shahabuddin extended greetings and felicitations to all members of the armed forces and their families on the occasion of the day. “The members of the armed forces would be able to contribute more to the development of the country in the days to come by increasing their professional skills”, President Shahabuddin hoped.

The first 'zoomed-in' image of a star outside our galaxyPARIS, Nov 21, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Scientists said Thursday they have taken the first ever close-up image of a star outside of the Milky Way, capturing a blurry shot of a dying behemoth 2,000 times bigger than the Sun. Roughly 160,000 light years from Earth, the star WOH G64 sits in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our home Milky Way. Keiichi Ohnaka, an astrophysicist at Chile's Andres Bello National University, said that "for the first time, we have succeeded in taking a zoomed-in image of a dying star". The image shows the bright if blurry yellow star enclosed inside an oval outline. In 2005 and 2007 they used the Very Large Telescope's interferometer, which combined the light from two telescopes, to learn more about the star.

Holiday safety campaign aims to boost Nebraska from among the worst states for seatbelt use

Lack of seat belt use is also a major contributor to the severity of injuries in a crash. Nebraska ranks 49th in the country in seat belt usage, according to the Highway Safety Office. Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia have primary seat belt enforcement. Seat belt usage rates are even lower in the nine counties comprising the Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department district.

The number of patients hospitalised with the disease this year has risen to 84,368. The Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS, said as many as 358 new patients were hospitalised in the Dhaka metropolitan area over the period. The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000. Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023.

Dear Eric: I have two brothers that have recently failed to send a birthday gift or even a card to my 12-year-old daughter. My wife and I on the other hand always send birthday gifts or money and a card to their kids, our nieces and nephews. One of my brothers just sent a request for a video game birthday gift to his 9-year-old son. I am happy to give a gift to my nephew but also a bit annoyed that this is not reciprocated. The niece/nephew gift exchange need not be tit for tat, but it’s important that your brothers know that you’re not feeling the kind of family connection that you want.

New IGP Baharul, DMP Commissioner Sajjat take charge
They took charge from the previous IGP and DMP commissioner in their respective offices in Dhaka on Thursday morning. Baharul, who retired four years ago, was selected as the new IGP while Sajjat got the nod as the DMP commissioner on Wednesday. In a statement, DMP spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman confirmed the transfer of the agency’s leadership to Sajjat. Sajjat, appointed on the same day, will succeed DMP Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan. India's Adani Group sees $30 billion in value wiped off after US indictments
Shares of Adani Group companies lost about $28 billion in market value in morning trade on Thursday after US prosecutors charged the billionaire chairman of the Indian conglomerate in an alleged bribery and fraud scheme. Gautam Adani's flagship company Adani Enterprises tumbled 23%, while Adani Ports, Adani Total Gas, Adani Green, Adani Power, Adani Wilmar and Adani Energy Solutions, ACC, Ambuja Cements and NDTV fell between 9% and 20%. Adani group's 10 listed stocks had a total market capitalisation of about $141 billion at 0534 GMT, compared to $169.08 billion on Tuesday. The US Justice Department also included Adani Green board member Vneet Jaain in the criminal indictment, it said. The falls were the largest since the Adani Group came under a short-seller attack in February 2023.

President remembers Liberation War martyrs on Armed Forces Day
President Mohammed Shahabuddin paid tribute to the martyrs of the Bangladesh Liberation War by placing a wreath at the Shikha Anirban (Eternal Flame) in the Dhaka Cantonment area, marking Armed Forces Day today.
