7 killed as fire breaks out in shop-cum-residential building in MumbaiMUMBAI, Oct 6, 2024 (BSS/PTI) - Seven persons, including three minors, were killed after a fire broke out in a double-storey shop-cum-residential structure in Mumbai on Sunday morning, a fire official said. The ground floor of the structure was used as a shop and the upper floor as residence, the official said. The blaze was confined to the electric wiring and installations in the shop at the ground floor and spread to the upper floor, he said, adding it was a 'level-one' fire. They were taken to the Rajawadi Hospital where all of them were declared brought dead, the official said. The deceased have been identified as Paris Gupta, 7, Manju Prem Gupta, 30, Anita Gupta, 39, Prem Gupta, 30, Narendra Gupta, 10, Vidhi Chediram Gupta, 15, and Gitadevi Dharamdev Gupta, 60, he said.

The individuals listed in the BFIU’s letter include Sobhan, Co-Chairman Sadat Sobhan, Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, and Vice-Chairman Safiat Sobhan and Safwan Sobhan. The BFIU has also directed the banks to freeze the accounts of Sonia Ferdousi Sobhan, Sabrina Sobhan, and Yeasha Sobhan. According to the BIFU’s letter, the accounts will remain frozen for 30 days under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. An official from the agency told bdnews24.com that the letter was sent to banks in the afternoon.

Representatives of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement visited 44 districts from Sept 8-18, meeting with families of those who died during the movement and holding discussions against extortion and terrorism. Coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud told bdnews24.com, "We are not forming a political party now. What a surprise those soldiers of Troy had when they laid down their weapons to cheer and hug that humongous Trojan Horse. I was ten years old when I first read that story, and did not trust a horse for several years after…Some ambuscades do not fare as well as the Trojan Horse. Well, there is a more natural demobilizing weapon that is most effective, though often overlooked, and it’s called, a pun. A good pun, or better yet, a bad one, can become an epiphany to an innocent interloper, and upgrade his disposition without harming him.

Nahid, also in-charge of Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, was addressing a seminar titled ‘The Cross-Border Spread of Misinformation in South Asia’ at a city hotel. He said that attempts are being made to establish such propaganda in the international arena, which is not expected at all. Professor Salimullah Khan and ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury spoke at the seminar, among others.

At least five people have died and more than 100,000 remain stranded as devastating floods, triggered by heavy rains and upstream torrents, continue to ravage northern Bangladesh, officials said on Sunday. In Sherpur, one of the hardest-hit northern districts, the water levels of major rivers have surged, submerging new areas and displacing thousands of families. Army personnel, using boats and helicopters, have joined rescue efforts, delivering emergency supplies and evacuating those trapped by the floods. The floods in August in eastern Bangladesh, which left more than 70 dead, caused damage estimated at $1.20 billion, according to a study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue, a leading think-tank. The United Nations and its partners have launched a $134 million humanitarian appeal to provide urgent relief and support to communities affected by ongoing floods and cyclones in Bangladesh.
