Canadian hockey player Larocque wants to see ‘Indigenous athletes excel’ beyond her success
The Nagano Winter Olympic Games, where women’s hockey made it's debut, is where Team Canada defenceman Jocelyne Larocque ignited her own Olympic dream. Larocque said it's wonderful to now have the Professional Women’s Hockey League, where she plays for the Ottawa Charge. Fritzsche, who is 18 months older than Larocque, said everyone played hockey together while growing up their a close-knit community. 2 North York teachers on leave after racist social media messages discovered: TCDSB
Two teachers have been put on leave from a North York high school as the Toronto Catholic District School Board investigates an exchange of racist messages on social media. The incident was first flagged by a student who had access to a shared social media account for a program at James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School. Charline Grant, executive director for Parents of Black Children, said the teachers should have their licences revoked after sharing racist anti-Black messages on a shared social media account. “The principal and the superintendent, from what we have heard, they did not take it seriously initially. She also urges the school board to not “recycle” teachers by transferring them to another school — a solution that happens all too often in these cases, she said.

Canada has officially joined the EU's loans-for-weapons program
Defence Minister David McGuinty says Canada has now officially joined the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, which offers loans to member states to invest in defence capabilities. "The agreement strengthens our collective security, supports the development of key defence capabilities, and gives Canadian industry access to European defence markets while contributing to European and Ukrainian security," McGuinty said in a statement sent to CBC News. The official joining comes less than a year after Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a strategic defence and security partnership with the European Union, which included joining SAFE. The SAFE program allows partner countries to access low-interest loans for the joint procurement of military gear and weapons. The program was announced by the EU in March and is part of a European effort to rearm in the face of Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine.

The head of Canada's military space division says the country "should absolutely be" concerned about Russia's potential capabilities amid global fears the Kremlin is considering putting nuclear weapons in place to target satellites. "That would be cataclysmic," said Brig.-Gen. Christopher Horner, Commander of 3 Canadian Space Division during an interview with CBC's The House. Horner's warning comes as global leaders, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, express fears about Russia using nuclear weapons against satellites.
