NWT’s Northern Journalism Training Initiative is shutting down
The Northern Journalism Training Initiative, established to help NWT residents access the world of journalism and broadcasting, has run out of funding and will close next month. NJTI was formed after a group of northern and Indigenous media workers gathered in 2020 to create an organization that would “empower northern people to tell northern stories.”By 2023, the initiative was delivering its first four-week intensive program to an all-Indigenous class of prospective storytellers in Inuvik. A second four-week program ran in Hay River last year, offering workshops with journalists alongside classroom based and on-location training. Now, Jefferd-Moore says NJTI’s mission will need to live on in the people who participated in its programming – and in newsrooms like CBC North and Cabin Radio. She described asking newsroom editors if they would be inclined to hire northerners graduating from a four-week NJTI program over southerners with a four-year journalism degree.

Kori Cheverie focused on growth as Victoire continue to try and find the right combinations
The Montreal Victoire remain a work in progress — and head coach Kori Cheverie is more than comfortable with that reality. The Victoire shuffled their lines in their recent game against the Minnesota Frost, which Cheverie said was part circumstance and part opportunity. With all 14 forwards healthy only recently, she acknowledged how tricky it is to settle on consistent combinations. As a result, finding chemistry will take time, but she’s encouraged by what she’s seen so far. Cheverie had nothing but praise for Ann-Renée Desbiens, calling this the strongest stretch she’s seen from the veteran goalie.

N.L. Hydro issues power warning for Saturday, asks residents to conserve
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has issued a power warning for Saturday morning, and is asking residents on the island to conserve electricity where possible. The power warning comes into effect at 6 a.m. NT, the company said in a news release Friday night. The warning is issued when the electricity grid nears maximum capacity. The company said conservation means turning off unnecessary lights, limiting hot water usage or turning the heat down a few degrees. It’s the second power warning issued by N.L.

Hamilton opens emergency warming centre as extreme cold sets in, other spaces already full
As Hamilton braces for extreme cold this weekend, drop-in spaces and emergency shelters are expecting a surge in demand from people with nowhere else to go. Both of the warming spaces run by St. Matthew’s House were full on Friday “as expected,” said executive director Renée Wetselaar. City opening Bennetto Community Centre on SaturdayThe city said Friday there will also be five more beds at Mary's Place, an emergency shelter for women and 20 more spaces at the Good Shepherd's Cathedral emergency shelter for men. On Saturday, after cold temperatures had set in, the city said it was also activating an emergency warming centre that would operate around the clock at Bennetto Community Centre. Central Library to close on SundaysIn the winter months, the city offers its recreation centres and public libraries as warming spaces during business hours.

For economist Jim Stanford, property controls are yet another way grocery giants exploit their shoppers. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew’s government introduced legislation in 2025 to stop property controls that prevent competitors from selling food near grocery giants. Thousands of flights cancelled across U.S. as major winter storm hits
Almost 10,000 flights across the U.S. s et to take off over the weekend have been cancelled as a major storm expected to wreak havoc across much of the country bears down, threatening to knock out power for days and snarl major roadways. Roughly 140 million people were under a winter storm warning from New Mexico to New England. More than 3,600 flights were delayed or cancelled on Saturday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. Frigid temperatures and iceUtility companies braced for power outages because ice-coated trees and power lines can keep falling long after a storm has passed. The storm has been a popular topic of discussion for days at Saint Paul Mini Market in Baltimore.
