Did Canadian exchange officers participate in US Iran strike planning? DND says no, but questions linger
A former senior Canadian general says it's highly likely some Canadian military members, on exchange with the United States, would have been involved at some level in the planning and co-ordination of air strikes on Iran — something the Department of National Defence disputes. His statement, however, did not specifically address the fate of exchange officers currently serving with the U.S. military. In a late Sunday statement, DND said Canadian military members had "no involvement in the United States’ Operation Epic Fury, nor were any CAF members involved in its planning." Iran has fired missiles at several neighbouring Arab Gulf states, causing waves of explosions and sending people rushing for cover. CBC insiders and supporters tell us that it’s the digital world where the real action’s happening. Remember – since they also enjoy revenue from advertising, subscriptions, and asset leasing – even the massive public funding numbers only represent 70 percent of total CBC income. The bottom line is that taxpayers are heavily funding CBC to compete head-to-head with (nominally) private companies and the CBC is still just barely keeping up. Ottawa won’t say if it penalized Gripen jets in 2021 analysis
The report comes after the federal government’s internal 2021 scorecard, revealing the topline totals from the analysis, was leaked to Radio-Canada in the fall. That document shows the American F-35 blowing the Swedish Gripen out of the water, with the F-35 scoring 95 per cent on overall military capabilities while the Gripen scored just 33 per cent. “We can confirm that Saab met or exceeded all of the stringent requirements for capability, interoperability and security set out in the Canadian fighter evaluation in 2021,” Fullerton said in an emailed statement. Alex McColl, who wrote his 2018 master’s thesis calling for Canada to buy a Gripen fleet, said the partial leak of the scoring doesn’t tell the full story. The Conservatives want the Carney government to push ahead with the full F-35 fleet order, while the NDP has argued for scrapping the contract entirely and opting for the Saab jets.
