TUNIS (Reuters) – Several hundred demonstrators gathered in Tunis on Saturday to protest against Tunisian President Kais Saied’s seizure of governing powers in July, which triggered a constitutional crisis and prompted accusations of a coup. The protest, accompanied by a heavy police presence, was the first since Saied declared on July 25 he was sacking the prime minister, suspending parliament and assuming executive authority. Police appeared to be treating both sets of protesters equally, standing between the two camps outside the ornate belle epoque theatre on Habib Bourguiba avenue. Meanwhile, with their immunity lifted, some parliamentarians have been arrested, while numerous Tunisians have been stopped from leaving the country. “They are only here to … protect corrupt people and Islamists,” said Mohamed Slim, standing with his son in the counter protest.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia on Saturday expressed concerns that Australia’s plan to build nuclear-powered submarines under a new pact with Britain and the United States could catalyze a nuclear arms race in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia will build eight nuclear-powered submarines under an Indo-Pacific security partnership that has riled China. “It will provoke other powers to also act more aggressively in the region, especially in the South China Sea,” Malaysia’s Prime Minister Office said in a statement. Malaysia urged all parties to avoid any provocation and arms competition in the region. (Reporting by Mei Mei Chu; Editing by Christina Fincher)

Business minister Kwasi Kwarteng said he had been reassured that the security of gas supply was not a cause for immediate concern but he would work with providers to “manage the wider implications of the global gas price increase”. The BBC reported that at least four small British energy companies were expected to go bust next week. “Protecting customers during a time of heightened global gas prices is an absolute priority,” he said on Twitter. RENEWABLESThe government has been moved to act after low gas storage levels, decreased supplies from Russia, demand from Asia, low renewables output and nuclear maintenance outages combined to more than triple European gas prices this year, hitting record highs. Richard Walker, managing director of Iceland Foods, said a CO2 shortage would hit meat products, atmospheric packaged products such as cheese and salads, and long life bakery items.

PARIS (Reuters) – Work to shore up the Notre-Dame de Paris has been finished, allowing restoration to start at the cathedral two years after a fire destroyed the attic and sent its spire crashing through the vaults below, officials said on Saturday. Restoration work is expected to start during the coming months following a bidding process to select companies. Before that, a cleaning operation for the building’s interior walls and floor will start this month, the agency said in a statement. The fire at Notre Dame caused shock in France and around the world. Tearful Parisians and stunned tourists gazed in disbelief while the inferno raged at the cathedral, which marks the very centre of Paris.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) -Australia has made a “huge” diplomatic error by ditching a multi-billion-dollar order for French submarines in favour of an alternative deal with the United States and Britain, France’s envoy to Canberra said on Saturday. “It will provoke other powers to also act more aggressively in the region, especially in the South China Sea,” the Malaysian prime minister’s office said, without mentioning China. Beijing’s foreign policy in the region has become increasingly assertive, particularly its maritime claims in the resource-rich South China Sea, some of which conflict with Malaysia’s own claims. ‘DEEP DISAPPOINTMENT’U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said France was a “vital ally” and that the United States would work in the coming days to resolve the differences. The row between Paris and Canberra marks the lowest point in their relations since 1995, when Australia protested France’s decision to resume nuclear testing in the South Pacific and recalled its ambassador for consultations.

Senate Bill 635, introduced by Geiss, sets new guidelines in place for students to receive due process when facing disciplinary action. She highlighted that these bills will help to tackle the school-to-prison pipeline and ensure more justice in school disciplinary actions. In June, Attorney General Dana Nessel, along with 23 other attorney generals, sent a letter to the Biden administration requesting that the president reinstate federal guidance on addressing disparities in school discipline. Her letter came after then-U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos rolled back federal guidance in 2014 that sought to address disparities in school discipline.
