Classical music becomes exclusiveBefore recording technology, the only way to hear music was to experience it live. A clear divide between popular music and what became known as “classical” music emerged. A 2018 poll conducted by the U.K.‘s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra found that more young people are exposed to classical music through video games than through attending live performances. Video game music has come a long way from its first “bleeps and bloops.” Symphonic music will continue to accompany players’ video game journeys, and like “Starfield,” the sky is no longer the limit.

In Africa, Macron’s neoliberal turn has stripped France of the long-standing myth that it was somehow a more benevolent coloniser because of the cultural links it established with African elites. But what Macron wants observers to notice is that increasingly, French development aid in Africa has to be run by French businesses. Rather, Macron’s speeches put forward business activities and neoliberal values as French values that benefit the continent. Macron’s values, however, are the values of neoliberalism. Abroad, he wants French development policy to be driven by private initiatives.
