The BMW M Hybrid V8, a plug-in hybrid, is a track-only racing car created to compete in the international endurance racing circuit. For the commission, which marks the 20th BMW Art Car, Mehretu chose to adapt one of her most famous works: The painting “Everywhen,” which is now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. I kept seeing that painting kind of dripping into the car.”The first BMW Art Car was painted in 1975 by the American sculptor Alexander Calder after French racing driver Hervé Poulain brought the idea to BMW. The first woman to take on a BMW Art Car was South African artist Esther Mahlangu, who in 1991 painted a 525i sedan. Madeleine Grynsztejn, Pritzker Director at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and a member of that jury, described Mehretu as the “perfect artist” to take on the BMW Art Car in a statement released last June announcing her selection.

The nation repaid $52.1 million in the July-March period, when it should have remitted $512 million, Ahmed told lawmakers in the capital, Addis Ababa. Ethiopia and some of its lenders agreed last year to freeze repayments, which led the east African nation to default on a eurobond repayment in December.

The Ministry of Agriculture announced earnings of USD 2.2 million from 800 tons of cotton produced in the past nine months. While this demonstrates potential, researchers warn that Ethiopia utilizes only a fraction of its suitable land for cotton cultivation. Despite planting 81,000 hectares out of a planned 105,000, Ethiopia achieved 80% of its cotton production target, yielding 1.5 million quintals. Ethiopia boasts roughly 3 million hectares ideal for cotton cultivation, significantly exceeding current production. To address this gap, a 15-year national cotton development strategy is underway.

This interviewee and others say their journeys toward activism began because their understanding of Jewish values was inconsistent with what Israel was doing in the name of Jews’ safety. By reciting both Jewish and Palestinian victims’ names, they hoped to use Jewish tradition to challenge the devaluation of Palestinian lives. I didn’t want to do nothing.”For these interviewees, discriminatory or violent policies contradict their understanding of Jewish values, which they assert by standing in solidarity with Palestinians.

The artist Julie Mehretu has unveiled the next BMW Art Car—the 20th in the German automaker’s series of contemporary art commissions—at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Mehretu’s customised car will head to the annual 24-Hour race of Le Mans, northwestern France, in June for its first competition. Now the BMW Art Car is another version of my painting and it looks like its grille has inhaled the paint.” The Art Car commission is Mehretu’s most high-profile corporate commission in more than a decade. BMW’s Art Car Series, which launched in 1975 with Alexander Calder’s fittingly popping paint job on a BMW 3.0 CSL, has since involved many of the biggest names in contemporary art, from Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol to Jenny Holzer, David Hockney, Jeff Koons and Cao Fei. In addition to racing at Le Mans and travelling for temporary exhibitions, vehicles from the BMW Art Car series are on rotating display at the BMW Museum in Munich.
