About 85 Ethiopian migrants were travelling along the eastern migration route when the lorry overturned in the town of Semera on Tuesday morning, a senior Afar official Mohammed Ali Biedo said in a statement. Yemen is a major pathway for migrants from the Horn of Africa travelling to Gulf states in search of work. "The accident occurred when a lorry transporting migrants, misled by illegal brokers and unaware of the dangers of their journey, overturned," Biedo said in the statement. The Afar regional government said it was "doing all the necessary life saving operations" on the injured migrants following the "horrific" accident. Despite the risks, more than 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen in 2024 alone, many ultimately bound for Saudi Arabia, according to IOM.

ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 6, 2026 — Ethiopia has accused unnamed countries of obstructing its efforts to secure sea access through a mutually beneficial cooperative arrangement, according to a recent statement from the ruling Prosperity Party. “Countries view Ethiopia as a source of revenue they depend on, imposing unnecessary economic burdens,” the party said, accusing neighboring states of deliberately hampering Addis Ababa’s efforts to gain direct access to the sea. The ruling party emphasized the strategic importance of sea access for Ethiopia, citing its role in trade and economic growth. The statement affirmed that Addis Ababa will continue pursuing regional cooperation and seek independent control over a maritime route. The dispute reflects ongoing tensions in the region, as landlocked Ethiopia has long sought access through neighbouring countries such as Eritrea and Somalia, which have resisted proposals for military bases and control of their ports.
