Fasil Kenema and Ethiopia Coffee, two powerhouse teams, earned big wins on Friday to bring themselves back into contention in the Ethiopia Premier League title race. A brace each by Getaneh Kebede for Fasil and Mesfin Tafesse for Ethiopia Coffee was what Fasil Kenema needed to inspire a 3-0 win over Dire Dawa City, as Ethiopia Coffee beat Hawassa City 2-1. Fasil and Dire Dawa played a competitive first half that had everything except for goals, going into the break tied at 0-0. Mesfin Tafesse converted a 44th-minute penalty to give Ethiopia Coffee a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Mesfin Tafesse completed his brace in the 62nd minute, a goal that was enough to give Coffee the three points.

Attendees included representatives from the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and UK historical heritage scholars, among others. The looting of cultural treasures has remained a contentious issue between Ethiopia and institutions holding them in foreign lands. The return of the Holy Tabot tablet of ‘Medhane’Alem,’ a religious artefact central to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, is particularly poignant. Countless African artefacts remain displaced, raising questions about the need for further repatriation efforts. Across the globe, museums house a wealth of African cultural treasures that were acquired through various means, often controversially.

A deal under which Somaliland has agreed to lease a Red Sea naval port to Ethiopia has sparked anger in Somalia. The Somali government called the port deal with Addis Ababa “outrageous” and “unauthorised”. Despite the controversy and concerns about rising tensions, Somalilanders celebrated in the streets on Monday after the announcement of the port deal. Honey wine was among the first alcoholic beverages human beings ever consumed. Gize Negussie, who began producing tej for local Ethiopian restaurants in 2020, opened a honey wine tasting room in Alexandria in October. “If you offer Ethiopians grape wine and honey wine, they’ll pick the honey wine,” Negussie says. But Negussie believes that the new tasting room, where he offers flights of both tej and Virginia red and white wines, along with snacks like injera crisps, is the only tej tasting room in the US. But those two transportation options make it easy to get there—and to take the Blue Line home if you get carried away with the honey wine.

After all, if resources are shared by all, shouldn’t everyone else share the burden of ensuring their optimal usage? Unfortunately, this mindset fosters a culture of evasion, where individuals shy away from their obligations and accountability. What continues to captivate me is the all-too-common phenomenon of individuals pointing fingers at their peers for issues they themselves are equally culpable for. Through my experiences dwelling in such apartments, I’ve had ample opportunity to study people, particularly their attitudes towards managing communal resources. Residing within an apartment complex has afforded me a profound insight into the prevailing mindset regarding the management of communal assets and shared obligations.

The strike that killed Hamas’ deputy political leader, Saleh Arouri, threatened months of efforts by the United States to prevent the war in Gaza from spiraling into a regional conflict. Nasrallah said it was the first strike by Israel in the Lebanese capital since 2006. At the same time, the US is struggling to deter attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels on commercial Red Sea shipping. On Friday, Israeli aircraft, tanks and artillery struck several areas in Lebanon after rockets and missiles were fired toward Israel, the military said. Israeli officials have threatened greater military action against Hezbollah unless it withdraws it fighters from Lebanese territory near their shared border.

Addis Ababa, January 5/2024(ENA) Ethiopia has never attempted to trample on the interests of other countries and develop at their expense, House of People's Representative Mohammed Al-Arousi pointed out today. Accordingly, the recent agreement concluded between Ethiopia and Somaliland was open and does not violate the law and custom of the countries. According to the MP, the concern of neighboring countries was taken into consideration and weighed against the need for sea port, which is an existential issue for Ethiopia with 120 million population. The international community must, therefore, understand Ethiopia's aspiration for development and regional integration, and welcome the agreement. Mohammed further recalled that Ethiopia has been one of the few countries that maintained peace in the region and beyond.
