Editorial: After hundreds die of starvation in Ethiopia, millions more are in grave danger. Stop denial and declare a national emergency before too late! A severe drought impacted at least 132,000 hectares of farmland in the south, southeast, and eastern Tigray zones, endangering a crucial harvest for the coming year. While the efforts are commendable, if implemented, for millions at risk of death by starvation it may already be too little, too late. Authorities must stop wrangling over the semantics of description and declare the crisis a national emergency in order to coordinate appropriate responses before it is too late.

29 December 2023 DAWIT ENDESHAWAddis Ababa, EthiopiaReutersAn aerial strike on the grounds of a church in Ethiopia's Oromiya region killed eight people and injured five as they collected corn, two witnesses and an opposition political party said. Two deacons, two keyboard players from the church band, and a singer in the choir were among the dead, said a member of the church who requested anonymity. Billene Seyoum, spokeswoman for the Prime Minister's Office, Oromiya regional spokesman Hailu Adugna and military spokesman Colonel Getnet Adane did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A second resident of the area who witnessed the attack said the group was most probably killed by a drone strike. The OLF also blamed Monday's deaths on a drone strike.

Mohamed Hamdan Daglo's visits to Ethiopia and Uganda come as regional diplomats scramble to broker a meeting between the RSF commander and his rival, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The RSF leader met in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who said the pair discussed "securing peace and stability" in Sudan. It followed another high-level meeting in Uganda on Wednesday when Daglo met with President Yoweri Museveni. Daglo is also expected to visit Kenya in coming days, a source close to the RSF told AFP. The United Nations says more than seven million people have been internally displaced by the war, while another 1.5 million have fled into neighbouring countries.

In August, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission detailed widespread killings of civilians in the conflict, including in air strikes and shelling. Tewodrose said his organisation has accumulated data on about 70 drone strikes that caused civilian casualties in the Amhara region since May. Footage Al Jazeera obtained showing the aftermath of the Wegel Tena drone strike appears to contradict his statement. “The violence and drone strikes are part of a trend of collective punishment,” said Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes, a lecturer at Curtin University’s Centre for Human Rights Education in Australia. Al Jazeera has previously documented the United Arab Emirates’s extensive deliveries of armaments, including drones, to Ethiopia.

The collective feedback underscores the critical need for a comprehensive approach to transitional justice that encompasses criminal accountability, truth-seeking, reparations, and measures to prevent recurrence. It also notes the community’s readiness to back the transitional justice process, contingent on the independence and integrity of the institutions involved. To guide the development and execution of a transitional justice policy, the report offers 31 recommendations for various stakeholders, including the Ethiopian government and the Transitional Justice Working Group of Experts. The transitional justice program was launched in Ethiopia following the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement in November 2022. Despite this progress, experts and human rights advocates have voiced concerns about the program’s effectiveness in its current implementation.

Reading Time: < 1 minuteThe leader of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces visited Ethiopia yesterday where he said he discussed the need for a swift end to the war between the RSF and the Sudanese army, during the second leg of a rare publicly-announced foreign tour. Diplomatic efforts, including Saudi and United States-led talks in Jeddah, have made little visible progress toward halting the conflict in Sudan. The RSF has recently made military gains, taking control of Wad Madani, one of Sudan’s major cities, and consolidating its grip on the western region of Darfur. Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen earlier met Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, at Ethiopia’s Bole International Airport. Reuters was not immediately able to verify if Dagalo had been on the aircraft’s previous flight.

By UN NewsThe UN human rights office on Thursday urged the Ethiopian Government to ensure that ongoing efforts addressing a legacy of rights abuses, rooted in years of violence and ethnic unrest, prioritize the rights and needs of victims and their families. A joint report by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission emphasized the need to implement all components of transitional justice equally. In 2018, Ethiopia witnessed a surge in human rights violations, marked by killings, torture, and ethnic- and faith-based violence. Victim-centred approach criticalVolker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, welcomed Ethiopia’s steps to develop a national transitional justice policy aligned with the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. “Those who have been subjected to violations or abuses are entitled to justice, including adequate, comprehensive, prompt, and effective reparations,” he said.
